Device storage
To ensure optimal performance, the app checks your device's available storage with every sync. If your storage is running low, you may receive a warning. These warnings help prevent issues and ensure the app functions smoothly.
Types of Storage Warnings
(as of 1.6.4)
There are two levels of warnings:
- Low Storage Warning – This informal alert notifies that the available storage is becoming low, allowing enough time to take action before it affects performance.
- Critical Warning – This indicates that your storage has reached a critical level, not only impacting the app's performance but also causing potential issues across the entire device, such as slowdowns and instability.
Note:
These warnings are based on the recommendations provided by the provider of the operating system to ensure your device functions fully and efficiently. It's important to monitor the available storage and take action before it reaches a critically low level. It's generally recommended to keep 2-4GB of free space to prevent performance issues and ensure you can install OS updates for security patches.
Low Storage Warning ‘Avail. Storage <4GB’
The app displays an orange bar indicating that the device has less than 4GB of free space available.
While the device can still function, it is recommended to free up space to ensure optimal performance and to allow the operating system to function fully.
- Recommended Action: Delete unnecessary files, apps, or transfer content to external storage to regain space.
Critically Low Storage ‘Critical: Avail. Storage <2GB’
The app displays an red bar indicating that the device has less than 4GB of free space available. This could severely affect performance, cause slowdowns, and limit the ability to install new apps or updates.
- Recommended Action: Free up space immediately by removing large files, uninstalling unused apps, or transferring content to external storage.
Note: These warnings are based on the recommendations provided by the operating system to ensure your device functions fully and efficiently. It's important to monitor your available storage and take action before it reaches a critically low level.
Iconography
Yonder utilizes the official Apple iconography to ensure effortless orientation within the app and minimize the need for extensive training.
Various Screen-sizes and Orientation
Yonder is screen size agnostic and supports all iOS device screen sizes.
Depending on the device’s rotation (or smaller screen size (iPhone or Split View / Slide Over), the outline will automatically minimize to prioritize the content display. When you revert back to landscape mode, the outline will stay minimized, consistent with standard Apple component behavior. If needed, you can easily reopen the outline with a single click.
Multi-touch and pencil
Yonder supports both, multi-touch gestures (e.g. swipe) as well as pencil support.
Wi-Fi data settings
Ensure that Wi-Fi access is granted
Mobile data settings
Using a SIM card and wanting to make sure that mobile data can be used, ensure that ‘Mobile Data’ is allowed in the iOS control center:
Yonder app settings
iOS mobile data settings differ between iPadOS and iOS, particularly in how they are displayed and managed, depending on whether the device has a SIM card slot and an active SIM card.Below are the key differences, specifically in the context of mobile data settings and app usage behavior.
General Mobile Data Settings
iPhone
On iPhones, the Mobile Data option is always displayed in the device's general settings.
Mobile data for apps is automatically governed by the iPhone’s general Mobile Data setting.
iPad (SIM-enabled)
On SIM-enabled iPads, the Mobile Data option will only appear in the device's general settings if the user has manually enabled it. If mobile data is not enabled in the general settings, the option will be hidden by default.
App Mobile Data Usage
With recent updates, the mobile data usage of apps will no longer be disabled by default on either iPhones or iPads.
Standard behavior:
The app’s mobile data usage follows the status of the Mobile Data setting as configured in the device’s general settings.
iPhone: The app will respect the general mobile data status at all times.
iPad: Mobile data usage for the app will depend on whether the user has enabled mobile data in the iPad’s general settings.
Changing Mobile Data Settings from the App
When selecting the 'Mobile Data Settings' option within the app’s settings App Preferences > Sync Options, you will be guided directly to the corresponding iOS Mobile Data settings for the device (iPhone or iPad). This provides a seamless way to manage mobile data preferences without navigating through multiple system menus.
Important Note
On SIM-enabled iPads, users must ensure that mobile data is enabled in the general settings and for apps to use it.
App Updates
iOS apps are automatically and managed based on the system settings for automatic updates. By default, iOS tries to update apps during times when your device is likely to be plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. This typically means updates are more likely to occur during overnight periods when the device is charging. Here are the key conditions under which automatic updates happen:
- Wi-Fi Connection: Automatic updates usually require a Wi-Fi connection to avoid using cellular data.
- Power Source: Updates are more likely to occur when your device is plugged in to ensure it has sufficient battery.
- Idle Time: The system tries to perform updates during periods when the device is not in active use, such as during the night.
To ensure that automatic updates are enabled, you can check your settings:
1. Go to Settings.
2. Tap on App Store.
3. Under the Automatic Downloads section, make sure App Updates is toggled on.
4. Optionally, you can also toggle on Automatic Downloads under Cellular Data if you want updates to happen over cellular networks, though this is typically off by default to save data.
If you prefer to manually update your apps, you can always go to the App Store, tap on your profile picture in the top right corner, and scroll down to see available updates.
Important Note
iOS typically schedules automatic updates for apps and the operating system during times when the device is idle, connected to Wi-Fi, and plugged in to charge, often during nighttime hours. This timing reduces interruptions and ensures updates are completed efficiently without draining the battery.
On iOS, you cannot push a new app version to a device in the same way that a system administrator might push updates to devices in a managed IT environment. For larger organizations we hence recommend the use of a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution:
- Organizations using Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions can push app updates to managed devices.
- MDM tools (such as Jamf, Intune, or MobileIron) can distribute app updates directly to enrolled devices.
- This requires the devices to be enrolled in the organization's MDM system.
To enable automatic app updates on an iPad, you can follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- Scroll down and tap on App Store.
- Under the Automatic Downloads section, toggle on App Updates.
- (Optional) If you want app updates to happen over cellular data, you can enable Automatic Downloads under Cellular Data and then turn on App Downloads. Note that this might use more data if you're not on Wi-Fi.

This setup will ensure that your iPad automatically updates apps when new versions are available, as long as it's connected to Wi-Fi (or cellular, if that option is enabled).iOS updates apps automatically, but it usually does so in the background when your device is connected to Wi-Fi, plugged in, and not actively in use.
This timing can mean updates may not happen immediately when they’re released. If you want apps to update more promptly, here are a few tips:
Manually Check for Updates:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Scroll down to see Pending Updates and pull down to refresh the list. Tap Update All to get the latest versions immediately.
Restart the Device:
- Occasionally, restarting the iPad can prompt any queued updates to process, especially if the device has been running for a long time without a reboot.
Check Your Wi-Fi Connection:
- Sometimes, automatic updates may pause if the Wi-Fi connection is spotty or slow. Ensure your iPad is connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
Update to the Latest iPadOS:
- Sometimes, newer iPadOS versions improve the speed and reliability of app updates. Check for any pending system updates under Settings > General > Software Update.
General iOS behaviour
-
System Triggers: iOS monitors various factors such as network availability, device activity, and power status to determine when to initiate background app refresh for specific applications.
-
Refresh Intervals: iOS manages the frequency and timing of background app refresh based on factors like app usage patterns and device resources. It aims to strike a balance between keeping apps updated and conserving battery life.
-
Scheduled Updates: iOS determines the optimal times to refresh each registered app's content based on historical usage data. It may consider factors like when the device is connected to Wi-Fi, charging, or during periods of low activity.
- Background Fetch: iOS periodically wakes Yonder in the background to allow it to perform small tasks and fetch new content. Apps are given a short window of time to execute their refresh operations before being suspended again.
Note: the exact behaviour and capabilities of background app refresh can vary based and defined by the specific iOS version, device settings, and app permissions.
The app needs to be opened in the background (not closed / swiped away)
You have control over enabling or disabling background app refresh for individual apps in the device settings to manage battery life and data usage.
